Still, nobody saw this coming. Boy, the early-season Yankees were something, huh? On this day two years ago, Domingo German made his first Major League start, throwing six hitless innings versus the Indians. The Yankees were down in the ninth, but rookie Gleyber Torres , who had spent less than two weeks in the bigs at the time, capped things with a walk-off three-run home run.
A few old-time Yankees have birthdays today. Luke Boone, who started at second base in that aforementioned Babe Ruth game in , was born years ago. With a record seven Cy Young Awards , as well as wins ninth all-time and 4, strikeouts third all-time , Clemens is a slam-dunk, no-brainer Hall-of-Fame inductee on paper. We did it the right way. I played the right way. I poured my heart into a game I love. Want more Yankees coverage? And if voters are going to exclude Clemens and Bonds for a final time in , how can they ever elect A-Rod, Robinson Cano or any other players who were suspended for drug use.

The issue becomes trickier simply because this entire controversy strikes right at the heart of all of his success. In other words, there are many people who feel that everything that Roger Clemens ever did was invalid because of the alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.
After all, if he had an unfair advantage, why should we celebrate any of his accomplishments? The other view that I have heard somewhat less often is the general assumption that performance-enhancing drug use was rampant during the s, and if everyone, or at least quite a few players, were using them, there wouldn't be an unfair advantage.
If he didn't have an unfair advantage, then there is no reason to punish him. This isn't simply an issue of off-the-field problems that have limited bearing on his success.
Off-the-field issues are problematic, but those tend to fade much more quickly in the Olympics, did everyone automatically hate Michael Phelps for his marijuana episode? Temporarily maybe, but during these past Olympics, we were all cheering for him again. Maybe they shouldn't, but they do.
