Which votes count

The chief electoral officer declares the official results 20 days after voting closes. Once the count is complete for each voting place during the official count, the totals are recorded on a certificate of results which is signed by the returning officer and a Justice of the Peace.

The results are entered into our Election Management System which records the results. The system regularly undergoes independent security testing and certification. What is a special vote? From 9am on election day, we can count advance votes.

We count them at secure electorate headquarters across New Zealand. Returning officers in each electorate make sure the count follows the rules in the Electoral Act. After voting closes at 7pm, we count ordinary votes.

The manager of each voting place opens the voting boxes and the party votes and electorate votes are counted. After 7pm on election night, the results are phoned through to headquarters where they are recorded in a spreadsheet.

We need to allow time for counting the special votes, which can come in up to 10 days after election day. To begin the official count, returning officers create a master roll which lists the names of people who voted in each electorate.

This is the official count and can take up to 10 days after election day, following the deadline for the return of postal votes.
