I can't afford to make another solution because the EDTA is running out. Any help? I should add mL water to increase the volume to 1L, right? I don't get why the book says it will give 0.
Thanks in advance. Sorry to add on to this. I didnt know that it should be pellets So I thought.. Not sure how many g i added but it was way above the calculated 2g. Just add them slowly and you should be fine. I prepare only mL of mM. I put the solution on a magnetic stirrer, and add NaOH from time to time until it dissolves. If I'm hurry the pH will be to high.
I went back to the lab just a while ago to follow your suggestions of adding the NaOH slowly. It took forever but at least it is dissolving now.
I am letting it stir overnight. I know both my assumptions are wrong since adding NaOH actually helped. What might be the actual reason which is counterbalancing the above mentioned 2 effects are they even valid in this case?
By the way, higher pH is generally better especially if you plan to use it for chelation, i. A similar example would be 4- t -butylphenol, which is nearly impossible to dissolve in water without addition of a base, e. In experiments I had to reach pH of about 12 to strip the compound of the alcohol-proton, yielding a negative charge which interacts more strongly with water.
That is the reason why EDTA is not a primary analytical standard, and needs to be standardized after dissolving it. Adding NaOH also increases the ionic strength of the soln. Common ion effect doesn't play a big role, as Ksp value is quite large. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. I'm actually doing a western blot which has a buffer of pH of 7.
Or why is the dis odium salt more feasible?
